The Whispering Bear Award

Symbolism & Inspiration

1. Mystical Qualities: Bears often represent strength, courage, and introspection, embodying the profound connection between nature and the human spirit. By naming the award "Whispering Bear," we honor these qualities and their enduring legacy. The term "whispering" also carries mystical connotations, suggesting otherworldly communications. As explored by certain healers and shamans, whispers can be seen as divine or celestial messages, highlighting the idea that profound truths often come from introspective places. This aligns with the belief that nature, through its subtle cues and whispers, holds deep wisdom and insights.

2. Artistic Vision: The concept of "whispers" comes from being inside a movie theatre, where the ambient sounds and hushed tones create an intimate atmosphere, amplifying the experience. The quiet, almost sacred space of a movie theatre mirrors the impact that exceptional films can have, much like a whisper that speaks volumes in its stillness. Whispering is a common behavior in theatres out of respect for the shared experience of the audience, minimizing distractions, and allowing the film’s subtle elements to be fully appreciated. For us at DSFF, "whispering" also suggests a sense of subtlety, nuance, and the power of quiet influence. It reflects the idea that great art and filmmaking often communicate profound messages in subtle, understated ways. It reflects our festival’s mission to celebrate films that leave a lasting impact through storytelling and creative expression.

3. Connection to Denver: The award also pays homage to one of Denver's most iconic public artworks, "I See What You Mean" by Lawrence Argent, famously known as the Blue Bear. This sculpture, which peers curiously into the Colorado Convention Center, symbolizes curiosity, discovery, and a unique perspective—all qualities that are celebrated in the films showcased at the Denver Short Film Festival.
